What to Expect from an EMDR Intensive

The EMDR Intensive Process

Happy woman

Complimentary Phone Consultation

Start by scheduling a brief phone consultation to assess if the intensive model is a good fit and that we will be a good fit working together. You’ll have an opportunity to ask any questions that you have about intensives, EMDR in general or myself.

If we decide to move forward, we will schedule the intensive sessions during this call. I will send you the intake paperwork as well as a workbook that contains assessments and questionnaires that will help me get to know you and the areas we will be focusing on.

Pre-Intensive Interview

Before our intensive sessions begin, we need to get to know each other a bit more first. During this 90 minute pre-intensive interview session we will learn more about each other and begin to narrow down our focus based on the information collected in the workbook.

During the session, I will also obtain any further information I believe will be helpful as we move forward. At the end of this session we will have a developed treatment plan that's personalized to your needs with goals for the intensive sessions.

EMDR Intensive Sessions

Sessions begin using bilateral stimulation (BLS) to strengthen internal resources that aid in reprocessing. I will guide you through exercises that help identify specific targets for reprocessing. Then we move into reprocessing the BLS-idenitified targets.

It’s impossible to know with certainty how much we will be able to reprocess during these intensive sessions but the progress made during an intensive program is similar to progress made over several months of weekly therapy.

Post-Intensive Interview

During this 90 minute session we discuss changes that you are experiencing. We'll go over your progress and discuss new insights you are having. We will continue to use BLS to strengthen the positive changes you are experiencing.

During your post-EMDR intensive interview, we'll discuss a personalized plan for you to continue moving forward. This will enable you to continue your healing journey in the most positive way possible as we wrap up your EMDR experience.

Getting the Most out of Your EMDR Intensives

An EMDR intensive is a big investment in your healing journey. I do have a few recommendations to help you get the most out of the EMDR process:

  • First, spend some intentional time going through the workbook; this alone will prime your brain to reprocess most efficiently during our intensive work.

  • Secondly, clear your schedule to the most extent possible during the three Intensive Days.

  • The intensive days are often draining as you are focusing on traumatic and/or difficult memories and thoughts. I encourage you to take these days as a time to really nurture yourself.
