journal or write your feelings out

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy has gained recognition as an effective treatment for trauma, anxiety, and a variety of other mental health challenges. If you’re looking for EMDR therapy near you, here’s a step-by-step guide to help you find the right professional and ensure they’re a good fit for your needs.

Steps to Find EMDR Therapy Near You

1.If you’re considering EMDR therapy for healing trauma, the first step is often to search for ‘Find EMDR therapy near me.‘ This simple search can help you locate professionals in your area who specialize in EMDR.

2. Search the EMDRIA Directory: The EMDR International Association (EMDRIA) has an online directory where you can search for certified therapists based on your location. Visit the EMDRIA website https://www.emdria.org/ to get started.

Inside Scoop: EMDRIA is considered the gold standard for EMDR Training and Education. Over the last few years there has been an emergence of additional training programs that state they offer EMDR Certification. However, it is an under a separate entity than EMDRIA. I can’t accurately speak to the quality of all of these programs but some seem to offer a fast track to become certified.

Understand different titles and what they mean:
*if trained through EMDRIA approved trainings*

EMDR Trained Therapist: At minimum Therapist has completed EMDR Basic Training (roughly 40 hours) and 10 hours of consultation with EMDR certified therapist.

EMDR Certified Therapist: In a addition to the above, EMDRIA Certified EMDR Therapists have completed an additional 10 hours of 1:1 consultation and 10 hours of group consultation and 12 hours of advanced training in EMDR. In order to maintain certification they are required to take 12 EMDR related CEUS every two years.

Inside Scoop: It’s important to note that not all EMDR therapists choose to go through the certification process for various reasons and this doesn’t necessarily mean they are not high quality therapists and vice versa. This information is provided to help you make the most informed decision and have the knowledge to ask questions that help you seek the information that is important to you.

3. Use Online Therapy Directories: Websites like Psychology Today and GoodTherapy allow you to filter therapists by specialization, including EMDR. You can search based on your location and find detailed profiles of licensed professionals.

Inside Scoop: It cost money to be listed on most online directories. Therapist may prioritize some over others or may choose not to be listed at all. Not seeing a therapist listed on these directories is not a sign that they are less credible.

4. Ask for Recommendations: If you are already seeing a therapist or counselor, ask them for referrals to EMDR therapists. Alternatively, check with local support groups, or friends who have experience with EMDR therapy.

6. Look into Telehealth Options: Some EMDR therapists provide virtual sessions, which can be beneficial if you live in a rural area or have limited access to local professionals. Telehealth options have expanded in recent years, making it easier to find a therapist who suits your needs, even if they aren’t in your immediate vicinity. Research shows that virtual EMDR is just as effective as in person.

Questions to Ask an EMDR Therapist

Finding a therapist is not just about their qualifications, but also about how comfortable you feel with them and their approach.

Here are a few questions to ask when interviewing potential EMDR therapists:

1. Are you certified in EMDR therapy?

EMDRIA certification ensures the therapist has completed extensive training and consultation specific to EMDR.

2. How long have you been practicing EMDR?

Experience matters when dealing with complex trauma. This question will help you gauge their level of expertise. However, newly trained EMDR Therapists often work closely with an EMDR Consultant with many years of experience and can be a great option. You can inquire about how they stay up to date with best practices.

3. Can you explain your approach to EMDR therapy?

Different therapists integrate EMDR with other therapeutic approaches, Understanding their approach will help you see if it aligns with your preferences.

4. What does a typical EMDR session look like?

Knowing what to expect during sessions can alleviate some of the anxiety around starting therapy. Ask about session length, frequency, and the structure of the treatment.

5. How do you tailor EMDR for complex trauma?

Complex trauma may require a slower, more nuanced approach to therapy. A skilled therapist will be able to explain how they adapt EMDR for clients with long-term trauma or relational trauma.

6. How do you measure progress in therapy?

Understanding how your therapist tracks progress will give you insight into how they determine when the therapy is working and when adjustments need to be made.

7. What are your fees and do you accept insurance?

EMDR Therapy can provide accelerated healing compared to traditional talk therapy. However depending on your issues it can still take several months to achieve your goals  so it’s essential to discuss payment options upfront, including insurance coverage. Many EMDR Therapists are out of network with insurances but I always suggest  anazlying the out of pockets cost to use out of network benefits vs. in-network benefits.

Inside Scoop: As a Certified EMDR Therapist, I would often love to give prospective clients concrete answers to all of these questions but especially related to process and how the therapy will play out, it can be difficult due to the nature of some issues such as complex trauma. I do however believe, that you can gain a lot of information from asking these questions even if you don’t get a definitive answer. If you have a therapist promising success and healing in a certain about of time this can be a red flag because the truth is we can’t always know what we’re going to uncover when begin the work.
