What Are Therapy Intensives, and Are They Right for You?
You might be here because something in your life feels off. Maybe it’s the flashbacks to moments you’d rather forget, the constant hum of anxiety that never quite leaves, or the way your relationships seem to replay the same painful patterns. Perhaps you’re just so tired of carrying all this stuff around and wondering, “Is this really how life is supposed to be?”
If you’ve been considering therapy but the idea of spending months or even years working through your past feels overwhelming, therapy intensives might be the game-changer you didn’t know you needed.
What Exactly Are Therapy Intensives?
Think of a therapy intensive as the deep-cleaning version of traditional therapy. Instead of spending an hour a week slowly chipping away at your struggles, you’ll immerse yourself in focused, extended sessions designed to tackle the root of the issue. It’s a powerful way to condense months of therapy into just a few days.
Therapy intensives are especially helpful for challenges like:
- Childhood trauma
(you know, the stuff that’s been haunting you since you were six but you’ve been avoiding like the plague).
- Complex trauma
(think: layers of emotional hurt, unmet needs, and relational wounds).
- Single Traumatic Events:
(because even one major event can rock your world in ways you never expected).
Sound Familiar? Here’s What You Might Be Feeling Right Now:
- Overwhelmed by the sheer weight of emotions you’ve been carrying.
- Stuck in patterns you don’t like but can’t seem to escape.
- Disconnected from yourself, others, or both.
- Constantly on edge, like your body is bracing for disaster.
- Exhausted from overthinking, over-pleasing, and just… everything.
The Benefits of Therapy Intensives
While weekly therapy offers consistent support, it’s easy to get sidetracked from the deeper work you’re wanting to do as daily life stressors pop up and have the potential to take over sessions. Therapy intensives allow us to stay focused and less distracted. They are perfect for clients who want:
- Focused Attention: Extended sessions mean we’re not stopping just as you’re hitting a breakthrough.
- Deep Healing: We’re diving into the core of your struggles, not just skimming the surface.
- Convenience: For busy folks, it’s a chance to get the work done in a shorter time frame without weekly commitments.
- Relief: Imagine walking away from an intensive feeling lighter, clearer, and more in control of your life.
And of all of this leads to faster progress.
How Do Therapy Intensives Work?
Here’s what you can expect:
- Consultation: We’ll chat about what’s going on and make sure an intensive is the right fit for you.
- Pre-intensive Session: Before the intensive, we’ll meet for a pre-intensive session, where I’ll collect historical information and we’ll start discussing your goals for the intensive work. You’ll also receive a customized client workbook that will also help identify the areas of your life that need attention.
- The Intensive: Over the course of 3 days (3 hours each day), we’ll dive deep into your history, process unresolved trauma, and create space for healing.
- Follow-Up: After the intensive, you’ll have support to integrate the work we’ve done and we’ll discuss options for continued support.
How Does EMDR Fit In?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is one of the most effective tools for trauma therapy, and it’s a cornerstone of my intensive work. EMDR helps reprocess traumatic memories so they lose their emotional charge and shift core beliefs that you’ve held, allowing you to move forward without being triggered by the past.
During an intensive, we use EMDR to:
- Target the memories or experiences that are at the root of your current struggles.
- Reprocess those memories in a way that feels safe and manageable.
- Help your brain rewire itself to see those experiences as less overwhelming and more resolved.
EMDR’s structured approach makes it especially helpful for intensive work because it allows us to go deep without feeling lost in the process. Many clients find that it’s a game-changer for reducing symptoms like anxiety, flashbacks, hypervigilance and core negative self-beliefs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will it be too intense? It’s called an “intensive,” but that doesn’t mean you’ll be emotionally bulldozed. We’ll go at a pace that feels manageable for you. It’s intensive in the sense that you’ve created a larger chunk of time for your healing.
What if I’m not ready? That’s okay! Part of the consultation process is to figure out if this is the right time and approach for you and if it’s not, we can talk about other options.
Does it really work? Yes. I’ve seen clients experience profound shifts in a matter of days. If you’re ready to do the work, the results can be life-changing. Your personal progress depends on many factors, but there’s no denying the benefits of setting aside a chunk of time to dive into your personal healing.
